Wow, WoW isn't just a game after all
New study suggests that 'World of Warcraft' creates business-savvy professionals

Spending hour after hour playing “World of Warcraft,” a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, may sound dorky and strange to some people, but a study released by IBM and software maker Seriosity revealed that playing the game can actually create valuable business skills.
These games “mirror the business context more than you would assume,” said Byron Reeves, professor of communication at
“WoW” is a hugely popular online video game where players create and control a character within a game world. The game world operates much like the real world. Players interact with each other, travel, go on quests and are rewarded when they succeed by receiving money, power and experience.
In March of this year, Blizzard Entertainment the publisher of “WoW” announced that users worldwide reached a record of 8.5 million.
While not all of these users can translate their gaming skills to real-world corporate environments, according to IBM’s study, many players undertaking these experiences “self-organize, develop skills and settle into various roles. Leaders emerge that are capable of recruiting organizing, motivating and directing large groups of players toward a common goal. And decisions are made quickly, with ample, but imperfect information.”
The study also suggests that these types of role-playing games actually build social abilities and force players to communicate on many different levels, breeding good leaders with strong communication skills.
That, along with the fact that the game is task-oriented and asks gamers to constantly adapt to varying situations, seems to suggest that games like “WoW” are actually generating the business leaders of tomorrow.
