This weekend, when you’re putting on your dancing shoes in preparation for a night of wild lunacy, remember that you could be dancing and singing for a cause.
Downtown Idol is a Valleywide contest for the best karaoke singer that benefits the Hope Center, a recreation facility for underprivileged youth being built in Phoenix.
This event is a result of numerous nightclubs in the Phoenix area conducting a strenuous search for the best karaoke singer. These establishments held competitions to nominate their city’s best karaoke singer.
Similar to its namesake’s set up, a local celebrity panel will judge the top 10 contestants until it’s down to the final three, all of whom will perform an encore song.
Then, the audience will vote on their favorite singer by depositing their raffle ticket, which will be totaled at the end of the contest.
DJ P-Body will be on hand to play music and pick from the hundreds of raffle tickets to give out prizes.
The top three contestants will win prizes and gift certificates and the winner, who is ultimately decided by the audience, will win $500, the trophy and title of Best Karaoke Singer in the Valley.
People in attendance can enjoy wine and free non-alcoholic drinks and also have the possibility of winning raffled prizes.
And, don’t feel bad about going and watching people make fools of themselves in front of a live audience, because at the end of the day, it’s a friendly competition for a good cause.
Downtown Idol, Main Street Plaza, Main Street and Goldwater Boulevard, Scottsdale, 480.457.0303, Saturday, May 10, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., $20
