Has the porn industry gone soft?

Shocking as it may be, adult video sales and rentals are down double-digits for the first time in 40 years. In 2005, the United States pornography industry grossed $4.28 billion, but in 2006 it dropped to $3.62 and according to industry insiders, the yearly revenue continues to decline.
This comes as a surprise, considering over the last 10 years the pornography industry has been kicking ass and taking names, generating more revenue than ABC, CBS and NBC combined and profiting more than the top technology companies Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo!, Apple, Netflix and EarthLink combined, according to recent statistics.
How has the hard-core video and rental industry gone soft if every second $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography, 28,258 internet users are viewing pornography, 372 internet users are typing adult search terms into search engines and every 39 minutes a new pornographic video is being created in the United States?
Maybe it’s not so surprising, though, considering the birth of the World Wide Web has allowed viewers an easier and many times cheaper way to access porn as well as a much larger variety of pornography for people with different tastes.
Some believe it may be because of the recession the United States is experiencing. Consumers are finding ways to cut corners and save cash by viewing the world’s number one porn website, YouPorn (similar to YouTube), which offers free uploads of pornographic videos.
Hustler president, Michael Klein, told cbs4.com that while DVD sales may be down his stores, magazines and casino are doing well. In fact, Hustler is now marketing the brand on cell phones.
Klein said, “Despite the economy and being in a recession, people still find ways for entertainment and adult entertainment (to be) affordable.”
Some also believe a quick cure to boost revenue is to profit from new technology, such as Klein’s recent launch of marketing the Hustler brand on cell phones.
