Changing Hands Bookstore presents a girls’ night out with Carly Milne, author of “Sexography: One Woman’s Journey from Ignorance to Bliss,” where $40 will get you a chance to meet the author, a copy of her book and two drinks.
Here’s what Milne has to say about her views on sexuality, the event and her brand new novel.
College Times: What initially drew you to writing about sex and women’s sexuality?
Carly Milne: My own experiences. Oftentimes throughout my own sexual journey I felt awkward, alone and like I was the only one going through what I was going through. Writing about my experiences helped me understand that not only was that not true, but also that opening up about such things helped me work through a lot of my demons and find a point of peace with my past.
Why do you think it is important for women to speak openly about this sometimes taboo subject?
Because it demystifies the shame we tend to feel around it, especially for those of us who have a background of abuse. I don’t think sex is anything to feel shameful about, and yet so many of us do for a variety of reasons...
What can readers expect from your new book?
Humor and brutal honesty. My path to learning about my sexuality wasn’t a direct line from A to B – it was a roller-coaster, just as I’m certain everyone’s is. So while there are a fair amount of embarrassing stories and silly tales that helped make up my sexual fabric, I also don’t shy away from explaining in great detail what it was like to be raped. It was important to me to keep a balance between the two throughout the book.
What are you most looking forward to about the “Girls Night Out” event?
I’m hoping to encourage a good discussion. I like my readings to be a bit interactive, so while I’m not in the business of embarrassing anyone or putting the audience on the spot, I do like to experience a good exchange of experiences and ideas. I tell you about my dirty underwear, you tell me about yours!
