The exhibit will feature large-scale paintings, “Haring hieroglyphs” on aluminum pyramids, wall totems and silk screen works from the popular series, “Icons.”
Haring stepped into his international popularity after his Soho gallery debut in 1982. In the first half of the 1980s he worked on several public projects, such as designing backdrops and sets for theaters and clubs, designing watches for Swatch, advertisements for Absolut Vodka and creating murals world-wide.
The artist devoted a lot of his time to public works that carried social messages, and in 1986 Haring created an outdoor mural in downtown Phoenix with local high school kids – the building is no longer standing.
Two years later Haring was diagnosed with AIDS and in February of 1990, he died of HIV-related complications. In honor of Haring, the Bentley Gallery will be donating a portion of the opening night proceeds to the Southwest Center of HIV of Phoenix.
Bentley Gallery presents Keith Haring, 4161 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale, 480.946.6060, opening night free to the public, Friday, February 5, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., through Tuesday, March 3, times and prices vary
