College Dropouts' minimalistic atmosphere makes for the perfect hangout

Just off Arizona State University’s Tempe campus and a few drunken stumbles away from Sun Devil Stadium, one of Tempe’s newest bars, College Dropouts, surprisingly isn’t a location with a lot of luck.

Located in a complex on College Avenue and Fifth Street, it’s the former home of failed bars Fumbles and The Dirty Devil.

But, hopefully, College Dropouts, which opened in December, will have more luck than the former owners. The down-to-earth atmosphere and decorative minimalism make it a perfect hangout for the low maintenance ASU crowd. Some people might call the atmosphere “cold,” but it’s really no more minimalistic than the average college apartment, scattered with random posters and TVs.

Inside you’ll find friendly bartenders, plenty of televisions for viewing sporting events and, awkwardly enough, pictures of unlikely celebrities framed and mounted on the walls. Jada Pinkett Smith? Alicia Keyes? It’s like they printed off pictures from a Google search and framed them. I don’t know if that’s actually what they did, but I like it.

Regardless of décor, nightly drink specials make College Dropouts an affordable option for college students.

Tuesday nights is “Drinkin’ with Lincoln” night. After paying a $5 cover, patrons can enjoy one cent domestic drafts from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. A Thursday night ladies night has no cover for either sex and $2 drinks for women.

So, cheers to hoping the affordable College Dropouts doesn’t live up to its name by dropping out of the college bar scene.
