Carrie Underwood's CMA Red Dress: Hit or Miss?

And that's why I decided to devote my weekly blog this week to ponder, "Was that really necessary?"
Apparently I'm missing out, because after googling about it online, there were such reports as "her dress was a hit" and "it was beautiful," etc.; I think you get my drift. But I couldn't stop thinking how absolutely unnecessary it was. I'm not discounting the fact that it wasn't pretty, but it looked like it had a train that dragged all of the way out the back of the stage and her fellow band members were practically swimming with it.
But I did enjoy when the host, Reba McEntire, asked "Can I borrow that?" afterwards.
I definitely would have paid money to see how she managed to walk off the stage. Who knows? She probably had to take it off right there in front of the stage during the break. Again, for those of you who weren't watching, the show conveniently cut to a commercial break immediately following her performance, and when the show returned she was dressed in a completely different outfit, one more suitable for walking, I suppose.
Doing a little more internet surfing, I've come to find out that maybe I'm not the only one who thought her dress was a little over the top. One blogger for the LA Times comments, "Isn't this much fabric a bit wasteful in this age of conservation? How many silkworms were boiled alive to make this?"
Now, my mind didn't automatically think silkworms when I saw the dress, but I did think that it was a complete waste of fabric. What is the point of making an enormous dress like that and then only wearing it for five minutes? I'm just having a hard time coming up with a good answer. Now, I'll admit, I buy clothes and end up not wearing them half the time, but this just seems that much bigger.
But then again, who am I to judge? She went from being an "American Idol" contestant to winning the award for Entertainer of the Year. I suppose she can wear just about anything.
Maybe she was trying to out-dress Taylor Swift or one of the other up-and-coming female country stars. And you know what, if that's what she was going for, I think she succeeded. You definitely can't beat that dress.
