Business and pleasure often form a rather combustible concoction, especially in the music world: just ask Johnny Cash and June Carter, Sonny and Cher, Ike and Tina, etc.
But a new wave of indie-rock lovebirds are challenging the notion head-on, gettin’ hitched and spittin’ out family tunes like the Duggars do babies.
Montreal-based duo Handsome Furs are certainly at the forefront of the movement. Dan Boeckner, co-lead of Sub Pop weirdos Wolf Parade, and wife Alexei Perry deftly weave together melancholic stories and melodies of indie pop with mechanical backing rhythms, a fantastical format continued on their latest, Face Control, released in March.
But the Furs aren’t the only ones tying the knot and sharing the stage. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel have been performing as Mates of State for more than a decade, but were married in 2001.
Viva Voce (Kevin and Anita Robinson) just released fifth album Rose City.
And it’s only logical that two of Arcade Fire’s 698 members (Win Butler and Regine Chassagne) would be matrimonially-linked.
More power to these young lovers in love (and perhaps more importantly, more jams for us to enjoy).
Handsome Furs w/The Cinnamon Band, Dust Jacket, Chyro Arts, June 12, 8 p.m., $13
