Easing what's become an increasingly-stressful transition, high school students across the Valley can now get free assistance to aid in their college planning.

From applications to scholarships and financial aid assistance, College Depot is the one-stop shop for local high school students who are looking to get into college.

After being open for only a week, College Depot director Judy Reno said the center has already gotten a crew of regulars.

"We have had lots of people coming in to see what we are all about," Reno said.

Reno said she expects more and more students to come in once the word gets out about what College Depot has to offer, and encourages anyone interested in attending college to check it out.

"We are thrilled to help anyone, regardless of their walk of life," Reno said.

Reno said the center will offer services seven days a week where students can get assistance with a wide range of college readiness programs.

"It is a place where they can come and ask questions and get support," Reno said.
Reno said the center also has internet access and computer resources available for students to help in their college search.
Currently, College Depot has two college advisors at the center, fluent in both English and Spanish, who hold open office hours and also offer one-on-one appointments that can be scheduled by the students.

Starting July 1, College Depot is planning to release a workshop schedule for the coming months.

"In the beginning we will offer weekly workshops, and then work our way up depending on the demand of the public," Reno said.

The center will host a college fair Friday, June 26, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for high school students and their parents.

Reno said the center is expecting more than 20 different colleges to be involved, including out-of-state schools from California, Colorado and New Mexico.

At this event, students and parents will be able to find out information about different majors, entrance requirements and how to apply for financial aid.

Reno said the event will be a great opportunity for prospective college students to meet with school representatives and learn more about schools that they may be interested in.

College Depot is located inside the Burton Barr Central Library, at Central Avenue and McDowell Road, and will be open during normal library hours.
