Drinkin' on the west side isn't a challenge; there are plenty of bars and watering holes. It's finding a good place to toss a few back that can be tricky.

In recent years, the bar scene has improved greatly in Glendale and Peoria, specifically, but most of these improvements are due to chain establishments taking hold at places like Westgate.

Finding a locally-owned bar that makes you feel welcome is a little more difficult.

But Connolly's in Glendale is about as welcoming as they get. It's a casual, laid-back place with a lot of stuff going on, good drink deals and a surprisingly deep bar menu.

Happy hour runs every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and includes $2.75 domestic bottles, $3.50 well drinks and $2 domestic drafts.

The bar serves breakfast daily until 3 p.m. and has an extensive lunch and dinner menu, too, featuring several types of burgers, chicken sandwiches and pizzas. The appetizer menu also has plenty to eat like quesadillas, poppers and wings.

Connolly's is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Sunday. For more information visit connollysaz.com

This place has retained its coolness factor through so many fads and trends, someone should commission a study on it. 2915 N. 68th Street, Scottsdale, 480.990.9033

Some call it the last real cowboy bar. That's not quite true. There are a few others, just none with this kind of real estate - smack dab in the middle of downtown Scottsdale. 7245 E. Main Street, Scottsdale, 480.425.7787

R N' R STIX
Seeing is believing - that's all we can say. This 50+-year-old establishment is like something from a dreamscape. They don't make dive bars like this anymore. Seriously. 6429 E. Main Street, Mesa, 480.807.9775

DIRTWATER SPRINGS
When in Apache Junction, this longtime local favorite always seems to do the trick. 586 W. Apache Trail, Apache Junction, 480.983.3478
