Growing up in Orem, Utah, tends to dictate exactly which way your life will go.

The heavily Mormon town is home to the most unlikely of bands. So how does a straight edge 15-year-old editor of a magazine called Drugs Suck, whose only addiction was music become the off-the-wall, black-wearing, questionably hygienic lead singer of The Used? By falling from his Mormon moral grace, of course.

It might have been a tough journey for singer Bert McCracken, but eventually his antics paid off, landing him a couple of hit records and a relationship with rock God spawn, Kelly Osbourne. And while the band spent time in their early years pan-handling in the streets of Utah, they don't have to do that anymore. In fact, they've got this whole tour that's helping them rake in the dough.

The Used, Marquee Theatre, November 9, 6 p.m., $27
