Flyleaf
Memento Mori
(A&M/Octone)
Grade: C

Taking up space this week in the tweenage girl's iPod, alongside Avril Lavigne, Evanescence and whatever sadly exploited gem that ended up on the "Twilight: New Moon" soundtrack, is Flyleaf's sophomore release, Memento Mori.

As much as we'd like to pan this album, there's something to be said for the respectable guitar hooks throughout the disc and lead singer's Lacey Mosley's pop-meets-alternative vocals. All that aside, we can't exactly endorse Memento Mori. It's jammed with radio-ready tunes with lyrics that are trying too hard to be deep. Basically, it's like they're reading one of their tween fans' MySpace pages and passing that babble as lyrics.

As for the whole "We're not a Christian band! We're just Christians in a band" thing Flyleaf has been pulling during their rise to fame, "In The Dark" pretty much kills that arguement, with lyrics like "Jesus heal me inside this/Raise me up like you did." Religious themes are riddled throughout the 16-track CD.

It has been four years since Flyleaf released their self-titled debut. It's clear the band has made little-to-no evolution and that's exactly what their fans want. What the tweens want, the tweens get!

I think this is a little unfair. Just because something appeals to a younger audience doesn't mean an adult audience can't appreciate or like it. Just look at Harry Potter's mass appeal! I'm in my 20s and really enjoy Flyleaf's sound and music. (Continued…)

That's completely unfair! How do you dare to compare Flyleaf to Avril . . . Twlight? Shut up! Those are mediocre things. Sellouts. But Flyleaf is a good band. (Continued…)

Go to a Flyleaf show and you can be sure that everyone there is not a preteen girl. What a load of stereotypes.

Can't say I agree with with this review. Lacey is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Fq1JnCjgW0

For a college student, this review is pretty dumb. she doesn't know what she's talking about it seems

If you're going to pan the album, at least spell "argument" correctly.

Wow! Flyleaf and Paramore are my favorite bands. They at least could have compared them together instead of Evanscence and especially Avril Lavine. Hayley Williams lead singer of Paramore and Lacey Mosley lead singer of Flyleaf are alike in many ways. (Continued…)

Flyleaf is most definately not a tween band, their lyrics are christian because they are Christian, and if you have a problem with that you need not listen. (Continued…)

How completely ignorant. Obviously doesn't have a clue what she's talking about. Nothing like paramore and and certainly not Avril Lavigne. Great vocals and deep meaning lyrics. (Continued…)
